From SCFwiki, the wiki for Salem Classical Fencing in Salem, Oregon
As a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, Salem Classical Fencing can always use a little more help! By donating your time, money, or supplies, you assist us in freeing up more funds to put towards scholarships, equipment grants, and other financial assistance for families who want to fence. Plus, donations of goods, services, and money are tax deductible!
Donated goods
We can always use donations of:
- Used fencing equipment* (masks, jackets, knickers, chest plates, UAPs, weapons)
- Office supplies (copier paper, pens & pencils, toilet paper & paper towels, mailing labels, envelopes, water filters, cleaning supplies, etc.)
- Snacks (For our Musketeers program, tournaments, and special events)
- Office equipment (flat screen computer monitors, fax machine, shelving units, etc.)
- Vehicle Donation (NEW! Learn how you can donate your used car, truck, or RV by clicking here.)
(* Sometimes we use donated equipment for our fencing programs like the after-school leagues, and sometimes we sell it. If you have questions about how your donation will be used, just ask!)
Special items
We have some larger-ticket items on our wish list, too. If you would like to make a directed donation for one of these items, please let us know.
- AED (automated electronic defibrillator)—all of our staff members are trained to use these life-saving devices for victims of cardiac arrest, but we have been unable to afford one. Approximate cost: $1000.
- Improved signage—We would like to install more exterior signage to make it easier for newcomers to find us, but signs are not cheap. Approximate cost (including permits and installation): $2000.
- Electrical scoring equipment for épée—We need a second set of reels and floor cords for out-of-salle competitions ($700) and another scoring machine ($200), as well as two overhead reel-less setups for in-salle use, which will save wear and tear on the reels (2 at $375 each).
- Medium-volume color laser printer/copier—Currently, all of our print work is sent out. We would save money and have a better end result by bringing this in-house. Color capability would allow for more attractive promotional materials and newsletters. Approximate cost: $800.
- Lockers—We would like to be able to install lockers (12" wide preferred, 9" okay; used or new) in order to conserve space and reduce equipment clutter and confusion. Approximate cost: $150 per locker.
Volunteers
Another way to help SCF is by volunteering. We can use volunteers for:
- Tournaments
- Office help
- Salle sitting
- Special Events (Like Aldo Nadi's Birthday Bash)
- Middle & High School Fencing Leagues
- Publicity
- Newsletter
- And much more!
For a current list of volunteer opportunities available at SCF, visit GiveBackToday.org and search for our organization. You can also track your hours there and do all kinds of other neat stuff!
Don't forget that expenses incurred as a volunteer, including travel costs, meals, lodging, and equipment (but never volunteer hours) may be deductible under certain circumstances. Please consult with your tax advisor and IRS Publication 526 Charitable Contributions for details.
Monetary donations
If you aren't sure exactly what we need, or if you would like to donate directly to our scholarship & equipment fund, we also welcome monetary donations. Your donation will provide:
- Scholarships for children and adults who cannot afford classes or after-school league dues
- Equipment for children and adults who cannot afford to buy their own
- Pilot fencing programs for financially disadvantaged families
- Subsidies for our fencers competing in national competitions
- Or, if undesignated, will be used in whatever area we need it most
Donating is easy—just visit our online payment page and click "pay now". You can identify your payment as a donation in the notes field.
Thank you!
No matter how you choose to give to SCF, your donation is greatly appreciated! If you give us your name and address, we will send you a thank-you card. We can also send an acknowledgment if you donate in someone else's name.
